I'd say that sums it up well enough. Just put ALL of your points into shadow, it will save you from severe-self-inflicted-head-trauma-due-to-WoW-priest-holy/disc-frustration. A few things take priority though...
Lv 10-14 Spirit Tap (VERY IMPORTANT Mana regen, reduces downtime)
Lvl 16-17 Imp SWP
Lv 18-19 Blackout
Lv 20 Mind flay (VERY IMPORTANT your other melt face spell which keeps you from smite-spamming)
Lv 21-25 Imp Mind blast
Lv 26-28 finish blackout
Do whatever the hell you want from there.

nifty arrows since rev likes to make links the SAME COLOR AS NORMAL TEXT. ;D
Once you hit around 50 or so feel free to leave shadow and spec disc or holy (Now that you can heal and constantly rely on someone else for dmg.) Hell, wait till 60 or completely forget about anything other than shadow if you want.
60 Builds - (links ahead!)
Face Melting Spec (Shadow)Discipline Heavy Healing Priest Balanced Spec (not strong in any of the 3 trees)I dont have a build for the holy tree, I've never really went too far in it with my priest. (Other priests may recommend you to go farther in it, I enjoy mana regen more myself.)
Alot of the specs are arguable, but I think you get the idea.
Martyrdom - I've never used it and it doesnt look too great, because in most cases if you're getting hit in melee range, chances are the attacker can interrupt your spells anyway.
As far as going on your own with a talent spec I recommend the following...
Take Inner Focus if you go into the Disc tree, its damn useful.
Take Silence if you're planning on some medoicre shadow, mages aren't the only one with a strong anti-cast. ;D
Holy Fire is a novelty, not a useful skill. It takes too long to cast for its damage, but looks really cool.
In most cases, you wont use your heal or greater heal, I wouldnt touch them. (Under most 40 man raid conditions, priests usually just spam flash heal and renew, greater heal is too risky with burst damage from the mobs.)
Hope this helps...
